Historic architecture and contemporary art combine together to create a unique visual experience in Downtown Augusta. For 80 years, the Institute has remained the only independent visual art school in the Central Savannah River Area that offers studio art classes and workshops on an ongoing basis for art enthusiasts of all ages, from beginners to professionals. What began as a club for art hobbyists has developed into a preeminent visual arts school and contemporary art gallery.

Located in a c. 1818 historic structure, the Institute is noted as one of Georgia’s finest examples of Federal style architecture. In private hands until 1937, the elaborate residence has stood witness to two centuries of American history. Learn about the families who lived here and the early 1800s architecture as you step on original pine floors, look through the original glass windows, or climb the floating elliptical staircase.

Explore the world of contemporary art in the Institute’s five galleries or discover your creative side in one of the many adult and youth art classes offered throughout the year.
