Gene Gurley had been in the service industry for most of his
life, so when he found out that legendary local eatery
Sunshine Bakery was for sale, he decided to take the plunge
and buy it. The downtown restaurant, open since 1946, had
built a solid reputation on one-of-a-kind dishes and Gene, who
had both grocery and F&B experience, knew he couldn’t let a
restaurant with 70-plus years of quality customer service close.
So he went to work, keeping what worked and making small updates where needed.
Open for breakfast and lunch Monday-Saturday, Sunshine Bakery is a New York-style deli specializing in hearty sandwiches on homemade breads. The sandwiches are great, but ask anyone why they visit and the answer is unanimous: the soups. Sunshine features a different one each day, and customers have been known to visit on a particular day of the week just to get a cup of their favorite that comes with each sandwich.
Add to that the Sunshine Tea (the best version of an Arnold Palmer around) and the pastries (try the Josephine), and you can see why Sunshine Bakery enjoys its welldeserved legendary status.
